Content Pillars: What are they and why do you need them?

You may have heard the term 'content pillars' or 'content buckets' thrown around whilst researching how to market your business, but if you have no idea what I'm on about, here's a helpful definition:

Content pillars are pieces of content that fall under one category but can be broken down into many sections. They're essentially the key themes of your content and will help you to market yourself more clearly.

Weird analogy alert!

🐙 Think of your business as an octopus; each leg would have a different topic that helps make up your business as a whole. You would create all of your digital marketing to fall under one of your chosen categories. Doing this will streamline your messaging and make what you do soooo much clearer to your audience.

Still with me? Cool.

It's good to have between 6-9 different content pillars under your umbrella to keep your content fresh and flowing.

So, for example, if you were a beauty salon, your content pillars might be:

  • Profiling your work

  • Behind-the-scenes

  • Tutorials & how-to’s

  • Sales

  • Showcasing your team members

  • Motivational quotes

  • Trends & personal insights

  • Provoking engagement/asking questions

Once you have chosen your content pillars, creating content becomes so much easier! You'll know what to say and when.
